Child Counselling

Counselling with children utilises Play Therapy and creative arts techniques, and is appropriate to their developmental age. The natural language of children is play, and so counselling can help to process memories and emotions through therapeutic play and creativity. Counselling does not “teach” behaviour change, but can support children to discover and develop their internal resources and support them to regulate their emotions. Sessions are focused on your child’s unique strengths and your parent goals.

Emotional regulation

Play Therapy can help your child understand their inner world and decrease the frequency of emotional ups and downs (“meltdowns”).

Adjustment to life changes (eg. family separation)

When life throws your child a huge curve ball, like moving school or a family separation, it can help them adjust by expressing and processing their confusion, anger and grief in a supported environment.

Anxiety and confidence (eg. separation anxiety)

By supporting self-expression, Play Therapy can help your child feel more confident and build self-esteem. Along with confidence, a factor in separation anxiety is in the relationship between caregiver and child, and so counselling may involve individual Play Therapy, parent-child therapy, or individual parent capacity building.

Trauma, grief, loss

Trauma and grief can shake our foundations (sense of self). Children can’t understand what has happened to them in the same way that we can, and their sense of self is not yet developed. Play Therapy can orientate them in their world after a loss or traumatic event and help them to understand their feelings.
